Mortal Kombat 3 is a fighting video game developed by Midway Games and Atari Games and first released into arcades in 1995 as the third game in the Mortal Kombat series. As in the previous games, it has a cast of characters that players choose from and guide through a series of battles against other opponents. The game avoids the tournament storyline of its predecessors, as various warriors instead fight against the returning Shao Kahn, who has resurrected his bride Sindel and started an invasion of Earthrealm.
The third installment of the Mortal Kombat series retains the notorious extreme depictions of violence that defined the series. It also introduces new types of the finishing moves, including Animalities. Other features new to the series were combos, predefined sequences used to perform a series of consecutive attacks. A «Run» button was also added, allowing players to briefly dash toward the opponent, as were «Kombat Kodes», an unlockable content system using various symbols that can be entered before two-player matches to achieve certain effects.
Some characters from the previous games returned and new characters were introduced into the series. Mortal Kombat 3 notably omitted popular characters from previous games, some of whom were added in an update, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, released later in 1995. The PC and home console-exclusive Mortal Kombat Trilogy (1996) added even more characters, as well as other new features.
Mortal Kombat 3 builds further on the gameplay of the previous game. A «Run» button, accompanied by a «Run» meter, was introduced. This was primarily to address concern from fans who thought that the previous games gave too much of an advantage to the defending player. The Run meter is drained by running (the character cannot run backward, only forwards) and by performing combos.
«Chain combos», also known as pre-programmed combos (labeled «dial-a-combos») were also introduced. Chain combos are button sequences that cannot be interrupted once one hit connects; some chain combos end with an uppercut or another move that knocks the opponent into the air so that more damage can be dealt via a traditional juggle combo. To please players of various skill levels, a «Choose Your Destiny» screen appears in the single-player mode to allow player-selectable difficulty.
For the first time, certain levels were interactive by allowing characters to uppercut each other through the ceiling where both characters would continue the battle in a different stage. This could alter the game’s level cycle. Both normal uppercuts and uppercuts that are part of a ground combo would result in a level change. Kung Lao’s «Whirl Wind Spin» move would also have the same effect. However, if the character is defeated by an uppercut, there is no level change.
All of the different styles of finishing moves featured in Mortal Kombat II (Fatalities, including the non-lethal Babality and Friendship moves) return in MK3. Additionally, the rumored Animality, where the character transforms into an animal in order to kill their opponent, is featured for the first time. Another new addition is the Mercy, where the character can give their opponent a small sliver of life if they have won two rounds and are at the «Finish Him/Her» screen. A Mercy is necessary for an Animality to occur. Finally, three new Stage Fatalities can be performed in the Subway, the Bell Tower and the Pit 3.
Another concept introduced in this game is the «Kombat Kode». A Kombat Kode is a six-symbol code entered at the VS screen in a two-player game to modify gameplay, fight hidden characters or display certain text messages. Also introduced in this game was the «Ultimate Kombat Kode», a 10-character code using symbols, that could be entered on the game over screen after the continue screen disappears in single-player mode. It was used to unlock a robotic version of the character Smoke; it can be done by either the player or the arcade operator. The arcade owner could reset this code by accessing the game’s diagnostic menu by resetting to the factory settings within the MK3 cabinet (except in version 2.1, which can only be done by accessing the EJB menu). The codes were revealed through gaming magazines, promotional material, and other Mortal Kombat media.

Но все это антихудожественная мазня по сравнению с nextgen-графикой MK X. На костюмах персонажей появилось еще больше мелких деталей, у заднего плана увеличилась глубина, а анимация удара носком ботинка по подбородку еще никогда не выглядела настолько реалистично. Еще больше красот – бонусные костюмы и фаталити-добивания – будет становиться доступными по мере прохождения игры. Заслуженное первое очко в копилку файтинга от студии NetherRealm!
Что быстрее?
Загружается операционная система Mac OS X менее чем за 10 секунд, а приложения в ней стартуют вообще мгновенное. Но по сравнению с динамичными драками в MK X скорость работы Mac OS X кажется просто-таки черепашьей. Да, MK X стал существенно быстрее предшествующей девятой части: медленный персонаж в игре, пожалуй, только один – Котал Кан, новичок серии и новый император Внешнего Мира. Лидерами же по скорости махания руками и ногами являются Джонни Кейдж, Милена, Скорпион и еще один новичок серии – насекомоподобная Д’вора. Счет становится 2:0!

Немаловажную роль играет обратная виброотдача, позволяющая хотя бы частично почувствовать, как несладко приходится персонажу, когда его бьют балкой или поленом. Да-да, взаимодействие с окружением перекочевало из супергеройского файтинга Injustice: Gods Among Us. Хет-трик!
Что надежнее?
Еще одним преимуществом Mac OS X является высокая надежность и стабильность работы: программное обеспечение отлично оптимизировано под оборудование. К тому же, ОС от Apple почти не страшны компьютерные вирусы. К сожалению, сказать то же самое про MK X нельзя. К примеру, игра позволяет начать играть, не дожидаясь полной загрузки, вот только об этом никак не сообщается (раньше в Steam такого не было). Поэтому при первом запуске у меня были недоступны сюжетная кампания и мультиплеер. Потратил полчаса на поиск решения проблемы, а оказалось нужно было просто дождаться завершения скачивания. Разок-другой игра аварийно закрывалась, несколько раз обрывалась связь с соперником в мультиплеере. Конечно, все это типично для ПК-шных (да и консольных тоже) релизов игр последних лет, но на этот раз балл уходит в копилку Mac OS X.
Что более жестоко?
Компания Apple нередко жестоко поступает с пользователями своей продукции. Так, с каждым новым релизом операционная система Mac OS X становится все более тяжеловесной, тем самым принуждая пользователя купить новый Macbook взамен старого, устаревшего морально, но не физически. Но жестокости в файтинге Mortal Kombat X все-таки в разы больше – эта самая жестокая часть серии за всю ее более чем двадцатилетнюю историю. От некоторых фаталити-добиваний при первом просмотре даже малость подташнивает. К слову, эти самые фаталити в MK X можно выполнять по нажатию одной кнопки, но только предварительно доплатив. А вот это уже не игрушечная, а реальная жестокость по отношению к игрокам, которые привыкли заучивать сложные комбинации кнопок для выполнения фаталити и тем самым выделяться среди других игроков скиллом, а не донатом! Финальный счет – 4:1.
В сухом остатке
А если отбросить шутки в сторону, то MK X получилась по-настоящему серьезным кандидатом на звание лучшей игры 2015 года. Сюжетная кампания получилась чуть более умной и логично построенной, чем в девятой части. Графика и анимация улучшились, к видеороликам между драками добавились квик-тайм ивенты. Ну а главным достоинством MK X является, конечно же, мультиплеер. Причем интересно «бить виртуальные морды» не столько незнакомым игроком по интернету, сколько друзьям, сидящими рядом с вами на диване. Король вечеринок Mortal Kombat 9 мертв. Да здравствует новый король Mortal Kombat X!
P.S. По иронии судьбы игра Mortal Kombat X не вышла для операционной системы Mac OS X, зато доступна для Microsoft Windows, а также игровых консолей PlayStation 4 и Xbox One.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is a fighting game released by Midway in 1996 as the second update to Mortal Kombat 3 (the first being Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn and PCs. Further versions were also released for the Game.com and R-Zone. It features a similar basic gameplay system and the same story as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but adds characters and stages restored from Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. New additions to the game included the «Aggressor» bar, and a new finishing move called Brutality, a long combination of attacks that ends with the opponent exploding. The game was met with mixed reviews upon release.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy introduces the Aggressor bar, which fills as the combatants fight (twice as much if the opponent is blocking). Once the bar is filled, it grants the character fast movement and greater attack damage for a short period of time.
Many characters gained additional special moves. Some were simple edits of existing moves (such as Stryker throwing two grenades instead of one), while others were unused animations never implemented in their intended previous games. These special moves included MK Kano’s Knife Spin move, MKII Kung Lao’s Air Torpedo, Goro’s Spinning Punch move, Raiden’s Lightning that shoots from behind the opponent, and Baraka’s Blade Spin move. Additionally, Shao Kahn gained a throw and grab-and-punch move, and Motaro gained a proper throw move. Sub-Zero’s famous «Spine Rip» Fatality reappears in the game but is completely censored, as the screen blacks out with only the «Fatality» text visible. This was due to avoid having to re-animate the fatality for this game.
Trilogy adds the «Brutality» finishing move, which requires the player to perform an 11-button combo in order to rapidly beat on their opponent until they explode. (Brutalities have been previously featured in the Mega Drive/Genesis and SNES ports of UMK3.) All of the arenas that featured a Stage Fatality are featured in this game, except the Pit II.
All of the battle arenas that were featured in MKII, MK3, and UMK3 are available in MKT, but only four backgrounds from the original Mortal Kombat were featured (Courtyard, Goro’s Lair, the Pit, and the Pit Bottom). The PC, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn versions lack The Hidden Portal and Noob’s Dorfen stages from MK3, while the Nintendo 64 version lacks Kahn’s Arena and the Bank from MKII and MK3, respectively.
Along with the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 roster, Trilogy adds Raiden and Baraka exactly as they appeared in Mortal Kombat II, with added running animations especially created for MK Trilogy. Johnny Cage was also added to the roster, this time portrayed by Chris Alexander (replacing Daniel Pesina, who was legally at odds with Midway). He kept his moves from MKII except for the Split Punch, which was excluded since none of the characters from MK3/UMK3 had graphics for getting hit in the groin. Bosses Goro, Kintaro, Motaro and Shao Kahn are also playable characters from the start (except for the Nintendo 64 version where only Motaro and Shao Kahn are included and must be unlocked via a cheat menu). The PC, PlayStation and Saturn versions also contain alternate versions of Jax, Kung Lao, Kano and Raiden as they appeared in the first two titles. Contrarily to MKII Raiden and Baraka, these versions of the characters did not get proper running animations and just feature a sped-up version of their walk animation when they try to run.
Two new secret characters appear as well, depending on the version of the game. Most versions have Chameleon, a semi-transparent ninja who rapidly switches between all the other male ninjas (Classic Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Noob Saibot, Human Smoke, Rain, Reptile, and Ermac) during combat. This character is playable by performing a special button combination. The Nintendo 64 version replaced him with a female character named Khameleon, who switches between the other female ninjas instead (Kitana, Mileena, and Jade).

Mortal Kombat 4 is the fourth main installment in the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games developed by Midway Games. Released to arcades in 1997, Mortal Kombat 4 is the first title from the series, and one of the first made by Midway overall, to use 3D computer graphics. It is also the last game of the series to have an arcade release. Eurocom (who had previously developed the Sega Saturn version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) later ported it to the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, PC, and Game Boy Color during 1998. An updated version titled Mortal Kombat Gold was released exclusively for the Dreamcast the following year.
The gameplay system in Mortal Kombat 4 is similar to that of the previous games; one of the most notable additions is the use of weapons and objects during fights. The storyline chronicles the attack from the corrupted Elder God Shinnok against his former comrades who trapped him in the Netherealm many years prior to the beginning of the series. The other 17 playable characters take part in the battle between good and evil, with the forces of light trying to stop Shinnok and the forces of darkness from conquering all the realms.
While developing the game, the Midway staff had problems making the graphics as it was one of the first 3D fighting games they developed. Co-creator Ed Boon commented that the staff wanted to make Mortal Kombat 4 more violent than its predecessors, removing the comical finishing moves featured in them. Since its release, the game received generally positive response from critics, with the exception of the Game Boy Color port.
Mortal Kombat 4 is played in a similar way to the previous titles from the series; the run button and combos are still used, and despite the 3D graphics, characters are restricted to a 2D path. MK4 introduces a limited weapon system, allowing each character to take out a special weapon using a set button combination. Once equipped, the weapons are primarily used through the punch buttons. This includes swinging, clubbing or even tossing the weapons. The weapons can also be purposely dropped, in similar fashion to the arena objects such as severed heads and rocks. If an opponent’s weapon is dropped, the other character is able to pick it up and use it.
MK4 added a «Maximum Damage» cap to the game’s combo system, automatically breaking combos if they deal over a set amount of damage to a player and, thus, preventing infinite combos (although this cap can be removed with a code). Unlike Mortal Kombat Trilogy which contained multiple finishing moves of various kinds, Mortal Kombat 4 only has two Fatalities per character, and two Stage Fatalities that can only be done in certain arenas and involve the winning character throwing their opponent into a part of the arena where they are killed. Unlike the first three games, this game does not include non-playable boss characters, except for Goro in the home versions.
Thousands of years before the setting of the first game, Shinnok, one of the Elder Gods who control the six realms in the Mortal Kombat universe, attempted to become the conqueror of them all. Thunder god Raiden fought and defeated Shinnok in a war that spanned hundreds of years, sending him to the Netherrealm, where he would be trapped forever. Now, Shinnok has managed to escape from the Netherrealm with help from the sorcerer Quan Chi, and seeks vengeance against the Elder Gods who banished him. In his plan, he first conquers the realm of Edenia, with the aid of a traitor, Tanya, while he prepares to attack the Elder Gods. In order to stop Shinnok’s menace, Raiden requests help from the Earthrealm warriors who saved the realms from Emperor Shao Kahn in previous titles.
